giving up his senate seat it clears for an election which could have a comeback for scott brown. every senate seat is precious in holding on their their majority. and it's going to be challenging. so why risk giving one away in a blue state especially to a guy they spent the last two years trying to take out? i have a hunch and it's nothing more than a hunch, the democrats are worrying about the wrong thing here. that brown won't end up running to replace john kerry and has a different comeback in mind. brown was last seen losing to elizabeth warren by eight points. but remaining quite popular. warren believe it or not is less popular. her favorable score in the same poll came in at 54% to 37%. this speaks to the central reason brown lost. massachusetts voters do not like the national republican party. they have not elected a republican to the house since 1994 making massachusetts the biggest state in the country with an all democratic delegation. and they've only elected one republican to the senate in 40 years. brown back in that 2010 special election to fill ted kennedy's seat. or,

brown hadn't even been sworn in yet in massachusetts and the url scott brown 2012.com was already purchased. but so may women had been in washington for so many years as legislators, working on important work, and yet their names never bubbled to the top. and we were curious why not? >> how did you decide you wanted to write this book with all three of you have studied similar topics, but how did the book actually come about? >> your idea. >> well, i guess it was my idea. i've been a political nerd, i don't know, my parents still remember my sister and i in 1960 stagy a nixon-kennedy debate with our stuffed animals. my alpha and beta her rabbit. -- my elephant beat her rabbit. during all those years of nerve them, what always -- the magis that would come out that would preview the eight or 10 or 12 evil ought to be considered. and it simply struck me after seeing so many of those issues, so many magazines, that women were not making it on to that list. they were not being thought to be presidential. they were thought for some reason not to be presidential timber. so as an academic

news" for wednesday, january 2nd, 2013. good morning, everybody. good to be with you. i'm terrell brown. >>> the american economy avoided a fiscal cliff but just barely. the house late last night passed the senate bill that avoids the tax hikes and spending cuts scheduled to take effect later this year. the legislation raises tax rates on individuals with incomes of over $400,000 and $450,000 for couples. it raises taxes on the portions of estates that exceeds $5 million. long-term unemployment benefits have been extended, and across-the-board spending cuts have been put on hold for two months. tara mergener is in washington with more. tara, good morning to you. >> good morning, terrell. the standoff over the fiscal cliff is finally over. many house republicans and even some democrats did not like this bill, but enough ultimately relented. after months of debating and back room deals, congress has passed a bill which will pull the country back from the fiscal cliff. >> on this vote the yays are 257. the nays are 167. >>> the bill extends the bush-era tax rates for individuals earning $4

'm terrell brown. while revelers ring in the new year, the senate is also celebrating. just a few hours ago it overwhelmingly passed a bill to avert the fiscal cliff. now president obama is calling on the house to pass the bill without delay. the bill stops most of the tax hikes and spending cuts that were to kick in at midnight. tara mergener is in washington with more this morning. tara, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, terrell. well, a deal is now on the books to avert some of the impact of the fiscal cliff which technically we have gone over. now it is up to the house. in the early morning hours of new year's day, the senate began voting on a bill to avoid the so-called fiscal cliff. >> the bill as amended is passed. >> reporter: the senate voted 89-8 to avoid tax hikes for 99% of all americans. >> this shouldn't be the model for how we do things around here. but i think we can say we've done some good for the country. >> r if the bill eventually becomes law, the bush era tax cuts will be permanently extended for everyone making less than $400,000 a year. and families mak
